Oakwood baseball season comes to an end

Oakwood’s baseball team made a first-round exit from the Class 2A regional on Monday (May 16), losing a 14-12 slugfest at home to Gibson-City-Melvin-Sibley.

The Comets’ 15-hit attack was spearheaded by Grant Powell and Dalton Hobick, each with three hits. Providing two hits each were Josh Young, Matthew Miller and Travis Tiernan.

Tiernan registered three RBI. Young, Brody Taflinger and Bryson Myers added two RBI apiece.

Hobick, who stole four bases, tallied four runs, Luke Wallace scored three runs and Tiernan crossed home plate twice.

Sharing the pitching duties were Hobick (three innings) and Powell (four innings). Both hurlers fanned four hitters.

Hobick (4-2) absorbed the loss.

For the season, the Comets had four .300 hitters in the lineup, led by Hobick (.468). Other top batsmen were Miller (.434), Young (.404) and Powell (.354).

Miller was the RBI leader (37) and Hobick led in runs scored (38), hits (44) and stolen bases (36). Young had the most extra base hits (16).

Tiernan led the team in earned run average (1.70), strikeouts (74) and innings pitched (45 1/3).

Hobick led in wins (four) and was second in ERA (2.28), strikeouts (41) and innings pitched (27 2/3).

The Comets’ seniors were Lucas Huchel, Griffin Trees and Young.

Oakwood finishes with a 14-15 season record.
