Commentary: As a society, we cannot forget this
By Zainab Susi
May 24, 2022 was another horrible and unforgettable day in US history. I am so deeply sorry to every single family and friend going through this strategy. My heart aches when I watch the news. Two days before summer break, an 18-year old gunman opened fire at Robb elementary school and killed 18 children and 2 teachers.
What happened? A person with a healthy mind does not kill other people so cruelly. Are we not teaching our kids how to handle stress, anger and self control?
Have we forgotten to emphasize love over hate, always? Caregivers have a very important role. We teach kids from an early age that no matter what, violence is not the answer. I hope and pray we never experience something like this ever again. But our history has taught us that unless we as a society push for a change, this will happen again.
Enough is enough. I ask our legislators to please do something. This kind of event shouldn’t be acceptable, our children shouldn’t have to go through active shooter drills in school. They should feel joy, happiness, and curiosity when they go to school everyday, not fear.
It seems like no place is safe anymore. How sad is that? The students were in elementary school. These events change a person’s life forever. The families of the victims, their classmates, their teachers, their communities, will never forget this. We as a society cannot either.
Put love first, above hate and please if you see someone that needs help. Support them, provide resources, help them.
Life is beautiful!
