Panthers top Mustangs in season opener

In the junior high school baseball opener for both schools on Wednesday (Aug. 10), visiting St. Joseph defeated Prairieview Ogden, 4-2.
Each school finished with five hits.
For St. Joseph, Eli Garrett cracked two hits, both doubles. Willis Canamore and Nolan Franzen delivered two RBI apiece with their one hit. Jameson Ennis collected the Panthers’ other hit.
St. Joseph sent four pitchers to the mound. Starter Franzen worked two scoreless innings and picked up the win. He allowed one hit and fanned four batters.
He was followed by Canamore, Tyler Wright and Finn Miller. Wright struck out four hitters in his three innings. Miller wrapped it up with two scoreless innings.
Dalton York stroked three hits for PVO and teammates Kaden Wedig and Jameson Ehler each added one hit.
Lane McKinney took the loss for PVO. He pitched two hitless innings, but issued five walks. York followed with a two-inning relief stint and Wedig worked the last three innings.
Wedig yielded one hit, no runs and struck out six batters.
PVO (0-1) returns to action on Thursday (Aug. 11) at Spalding Park in Champaign against Edison Middle School.
St. Joseph (1-0) plays its home-opener on Thursday (Aug. 11) at 4:30 p.m. against Milford.
