Comets looks to reach .500 mark on Friday
By Fred Kroner
Clifton Central scored touchdowns on five pass plays Friday night (Sept. 9) and held visiting Oakwood scoreless in a 39-0 football win.
The loss was the second in a row for the Comets and the second where quarterback Dalton Hobick was sidelined.
Oakwood coach Cameron Lee said there were stretches where the Comets played well.
“There were a lot more positives than negatives,” Lee said. “Through a good portion of the game, we looked as good as them.
“It was 0-0 halfway through the second quarter and we had moved the ball.”
In his first varsity start at quarterback, Jackson Dudley performed admirably.
“We didn’t ask him to replicate what Dalton does, but he did some stuff pretty well and made some good throws,” Lee said, “and our offensive line played a lot better.”
The offense was bolstered by the move of Bryson Myers from fullback to more of a featured-runner position.
“It was an adjusted version of our offense,” Lee said.
A first-half interception by Noah Phillips, Lee said, “sparked our defense.”
Phillips was injured, however, and did not return to the game.
Oakwood (1-2) returns home on Friday (Sept. 16) to play Dwight (0-3).
Lee sees it as an opportunity to reach the .500 mark.
“If we have a healthy squad, we have a great opportunity to get things back on track,” he said. “It has taken a couple of weeks to find who we are, and we’ve learned a lot.”
