Hobick returns, Comets win over Dwight

By Fred Kroner

With two players eclipsing the 100-yard mark in rushing, the Oakwood Comets snapped a two-game losing streak on Friday (Sept. 16) by holding off Dwight, 32-27, in a non-conference football game in Fithian.

Dalton Hobick gained 134 yards on the ground and Bryson Myers turned in a 127-yard performance for the Comets. Both Hobick and Myers rushed for two touchdowns.

Hobick, who had missed the previous 1 ¾ games, completed 4 of 9 passes for 90 yards, including a 35-yard TD toss to Noah Phillips. Phillips turned his three receptions into gains of 75 yards. Tanner Pichon also had a 15-yard catch.

Conner Moss converted two extra points.

The outcome wasn’t sealed until sophomore Chase Harrison snagged an interception at the goal line with 14 seconds remaining.

“Chase had a huge interception at a big moment,” Oakwood coach Cameron Lee said. “He is one of the cogs in our defense.

“He has been a great asset and made big plays when we needed them.”

Dwight’s last possession started with little more than 4 minutes to go, and the Trojans methodically marched down the field until Harrison’s game-saving play.

“They were about 15 or 20 yards away (from the end zone),” Lee added.

Meanwhile, Oakwood’s offense generated five TDs, the first ones to the end zone since a season-opening victory. The team’s Week 2 TD was scored on a kickoff return.

“To score at will is a good sign,” Lee said. “To know we can change the game plan on the fly and have success is good to know.

“Our offensive line dominated.”

Oakwood trailed, 27-26, after three quarters, but scored the go-ahead TD on Myers’ second scoring jaunt of the game with 4:15 remaining.

The Comets will take a rejuvenated feeling into a Friday (Sept. 23) game at unbeaten Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin (4-0).

“This was a really good win to re-establish some confidence in what we are building,” Lee said. “It’s good to be able to get through those close games and come out on the right side.”
