Oakwood soccer sets record for shutouts in a season

Oakwood/Salt Fork raised its program record for shutouts in a season to 13 by holding two opponents scoreless in a three-day span to end the week.
Goalkeeper Joshua Ruch broke the career record for shutouts (21), shattering a mark previously held by assistant coach Landon Turner in 2014.
On Thursday (Sept. 15), the Comets blanked Schlarman Academy, 7-0. On Saturday (Sept. 17) they dominated Iroquois West, 11-0.
Five of the team’s last six wins have been by shutouts.
Against Schlarman, Grant Powell registered two goals to go with one assist. Brody Taflinger had one goal and two assists.
Also breaking into the scoring column with goals were Saul Carrillo, Macen Phillips, Ethan Merritt and Reef Pacot.
Other assists were by Pacot, Merritt, Phillips and Ty Smoot.
Ruch was credited with two saves.
Oakwood/Salt Fork held a 26-2 edge on total shots.
Against Iroquois West, 11 Comets contributed either a goal or an assist.
Smoot, Saul Carrillo and Jacob Pricer all netted two goals. Powell had a goal and four assists. Brody Taflinger also collected four assists.
Other goal-scorers were Derek Drews, Pacot, Zane Trimmell and Ruch. Merritt and Phillips also had an assist.
Oakwood/Salt Fork held a 24-5 edge in total shots.
Ruch had three saves and Powell had one save.
The Comets are 13-2-2 overall and 8-0 in Vermilion Valley Conference matches. Oakwood/SF returns to action on Monday (Sept. 19) at home against St. Thomas More.
