Comets still unbeaten in Vermilion Valley Conference

The Oakwood/Salt Fork soccer program remained unbeaten in Vermilion Valley Conference matches on Tuesday (Sept. 20), collecting a 7-0 win at Watseka.

The Comets are 9-0 in league play.

Sophomore Macen Phillips posted a first-half hat trick to lead Oakwood/SF. Besides Phillips’ three goals, Saul Carillo tallied two goals and teammates Ty Smoot and Brody Taflinger each found the back of the net once.

Carillo had an assist as did Reef Pacot, Grant Powell and Thomas Wells.

The Comets held a 35-2 edge in total shots.

On Monday (Sept. 19), Oakwood/Salt Fork lost a 1-0 decision at home to undefeated St. Thomas More.

Goalkeeper Joshua Ruch had five saves in a match where the Comets held a 16-14 edge in total shot attempts.

Oakwood/Salt Fork (14-3-2) returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 22) in its home finale, against Hoopeston Area.
