Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin took care of visiting Oakwood on Friday (Sept. 23) in a Vermilion Valley Conference football game in Bismarck, 60-21.
The Comets went toe-to-toe with the Blue Devils much of the first half and trailed, 21-14, when Dalton Hobick scored on a 5-yard run and then added a two-point conversion with 3 minutes and 30 seconds left before halftime.
B-H/R-A, however, regrouped quickly and took a three-TD led into the locker room at halftime, 33-14.
The Blue Devils (5-0) returned the kickoff after Hobick’s score for a touchdown and added another score on the final play of the half on an 8-yard pass.
The other Oakwood scores came on a 10-yard pass from Hobick to Alec Harrison and on a 1-yard run by Bryson Myers.
Comets coach Cameron Lee rated his team’s performance as “the best game we’ve played offensively.
“Our offense is strong and we’re doing a lot of things well. We’re progressively getting a little better at what we do. Regardless of the outcome, we’re doing some things really well.”
Hobick completed 5 of 10 passes for 132 yards. Harrison had three receptions for 70 yards. Myers was the workhorse in the backfield, rushing for 97 yards on 20 carries.
“We stayed in the game,” Lee said. “Our offense can hang. The kids should hold their heads up high. It came down to getting stops.
“Our emphasis (at practice this week) will be on the defensive side. We’ve been caught out of position the last two weeks. We have to limit the big plays and be keyed in on our assignments.”
Oakwood (2-3) returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 1) in its homecoming game against Westville.
One-third of the Comets’ regular-season games are scheduled for Saturday this season.
“We should embrace it and own the opportunity,” Lee said. “Make it look like a college game-day environment. Take pride in it.”
