Hobick gets 100-yards passing and rushing in Comet loss to Westville
By Fred Kroner
Dalton Hobick eclipsed the 100-yard mark for both rushing and passing on Saturday (Oct. 1), but Oakwood’s football team dropped a 33-19 homecoming decision to Westville at Marty McFarland Field.
Hobick gained 123 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns. He passed for 115 yards and hooked up with Alec Harrison for the Comets’ other TD.
Oakwood, which led 7-6 after one quarter, pulled within 21-19 on the 31-yard scoring strike from Hobick to Harrison with 6 minutes and 53 seconds left in the third period.
“We have been playing fairly competitively,” Oakwood coach Cameron Lee said. “We have to find a way to pull them out.
“This is the first time in a couple of weeks that I felt we had been outplayed on the offensive side. They came up with a good game plan and limited our ability to run inside and to throw downfield.
“It left us scrambling.”
Fullback Bryson Myers was limited to 35 yards on 20 carries.
Hobick, whom Lee said, “delivers more often than not,” completed 8 of 13 passes.
Harrison was the receiving leader with 44 yards. Tanner Pichon had three receptions for 35 yards, Noah Phillips had two for 23 yards and Chase Harrison caught one pass for 22 yards.
Trevor McCall converted one extra-point kick.
The Comets play at Hoopeston Area (2-4) on Friday (Oct. 7). The Cornjerkers are coming off a 52-7 win at Georgetown-Ridge Farm.
“That’s a winnable game, but in the VVC you never know what will happen,” Lee said. “In tough games, you need to lock in and be prepared.
“No one is happy with what we’ve done so far (in a 2-4 start), but there’s no sunken heads,” Lee said. “Everyone is looking ahead to what is next.
“Our motto is “be all in,” and I am optimistic about the direction the program is headed. We’ve had some tough losses, but no one is playing the blame game.”
