Russell wins Vermilion Valley Conference meet

Junior Macie Russell continues to excel on the cross-country course for the Oakwood/Salt Fork girls’ program.
On Tuesday (Oct. 11), she was the winner in the Vermilion Valley Conference 3-mile race at Hubbard Trail, near Rossville.
She was timed in 20 minutes, 18.14 seconds and placed more than 57 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
On Saturday (Oct. 8) in the 71-runner Toledo Cumberland Invitational, Russell ran third in 20:07.1. A week before that, at Kickapoo Creek State Park on Saturday (Oct. 1), she was the winner in the Oakwood Invitational, stepping off a time of 20:12.68.
Senior teammate Kalie Tison has continued to drop her times, running a 22:50.91 at the VVC meet, where she finished sixth. At Toledo, Tison was 25th in 24:01.5. At the Oakwood Invitational, Tison was 14th in 24:32.16.
Oakwood/Salt Fork has not had enough runners to be scored as a team in meets this month.
The team’s other competitor in the girls’ races was senior Addie Wright. She ended 14th at the VVC meet in 30:18.66 and was 20th in the Oakwood Invitational (29:04.22).
In the boys’ races, junior team-leader Bryson Capansky has shown consistent time drops. He wound up 10th at the VVC meet (19:19.68). At Toledo, he was 40th (19:55.0) and at the Oakwood Invitational, he was 28th (20:34.42).
Sophomore Brayden Edwards clocked in at 19:48.02 for 14th place at the VVC. At Toledo, Edwards was 75th in 21:48.8.
Sophomore Logan Henthorn captured 17th at the VVC race (20:15.18) and was 66th at Toledo (21:18.6).
Freshman Ben Darling was 23rd at the VVC race (21:27.36) and took 38th at the Oakwood Invitational (21:59.76).
The Comets have also not had enough runners to be scored as a team in the boys’ meets.
Oakwood/Salt Fork returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 22) in the 20-team Class 1A IHSA regional at Chrisman.
