Comets win Tri-County boys’ basketball tournament

Senior Tanner Pichon was the top Oakwood scorer in two games on Friday (Nov. 25) as the Comets won team honors in the Tri-County boys’ basketball tournament.

Pichon netted 12 points as the undefeated Comets upended Judah Christian, 48-30, and then he generated 16 points in the finale as Oakwood overpowered Tri-County, 67-24.

Against Judah, Oakwood had to overcome a 10-4 first-period deficit. Pichon was supported by the first double-figure game for freshman Jackson Dudley, who tossed in 10 points.

Against Tri-County, Dudley tallied five first-quarter points to spark the Comets to a quick 14-2 lead. Backing Pichon were Alec Harrison (15 points), Dalton Hobick (seven points) and Bryson McDaniel (seven points).

On Wednesday (Nov. 23), the Comets dispatched Martinsville, 65-34. Hobick and Pichon each swished 19 points. Hobick drained five three-point shots.

Josh Ruch added 12 points and Brody Taflinger ended with 11 points thanks to a 7-for-8 showing from the free throw line.

On Tuesday (Nov. 22), Oakwood handed Chrisman a 66-36 loss.

Hobick popped in 16 points against the Cardinals. Harrison hit 13 points and Taflinger chipped in with 11 points.

On Monday (Nov. 21), Hobick and Pichon each registered 16 points, leading the Oakwood boys’ basketball team to victory in its season-opener.

The Comets overpowered Villa Grove, 64-30, in first-round action of the Tri-County Tournament.

Harrison pumped in 15 points. The trio of Hobick, Pichon and Harrison combined to make four three-pointers.

Dudley nailed the team’s fifth three-pointer against Villa Grove.

For the week, Pichon led all Comets with 69 points, Hobick had 65 points. Six different squad members scored in double figures at least once and 12 varsity players recorded at least one basket.

Oakwood (5-0) returns to action on Monday (Nov. 28) in the Toyota of Danville Classic at St. Joseph-Ogden High School. The Comets will open with Paxton-Buckley-Loda in the 8 p.m. game.
