Mustangs holding on in IESA play

The start of postseason play for the Prairieview Ogden seventh-grade girls’ basketball team was a classic case of déjà vu.

The Mustangs ended the regular season with wins over Heritage (Tuesday, Nov. 15), 32-8, and Schlarman Academy (Thursday, Nov. 17), 20-16, before starting into the IESA Class 1A regional at Holy Cross, in Champaign.

In the semifinals, PVO decisioned Heritage, 28-11 on Monday (Nov. 21) before outdistancing Schlarman Academy, 38-5, on Tuesday (Nov. 22).

In the regular-season game against Heritage, Atleigh Miller hit 14 points and Greta Goldenstein netted six points. In the tournament game against Heritage, Miller cashed in 10 points. Goldenstein ended with five points as did Kellyn Irwin.

In the regular-season game with Schlarman, Korinne Travis tossed in seven points and Goldenstein chipped in with three points. In the tournament rematch, Miller and Irwin each registered 12 points and Travis finished with six points.

PVO (17-2) returns to action on Wednesday (Nov. 30) in the St. Malachy Sectional, in Rantoul, against St. Malachy (12-6). The winner advances to the state finals.

The PVO eighth-grade girls’ team handled Heritage, 33-19, and lost to Schlarman Academy, 28-25, to complete the regular season.

The Mustangs then whipped Philo St. Thomas, 27-23, to begin IESA regional play at Holy Cross.

Miller and Hammond dropped in 10 points apiece against Heritage. Goldenstein (seven points), Miller (six points) and Irwin (six points) were the leaders against Schlarman.

Balanced scoring was the order of the day in the regional quarterfinal game. Miller recorded eight points and Travis tallied five points. Contributing four points apiece were Olivia Berlatsky, Goldenstein and Hannah Nirider.

PVO’s eighth-graders are 5-13 overall, but have lost nine games by single digits.
