Spartans open Classic with two wins

Four players scored in double figures on Tuesday (Nov. 29) as the St. Joseph-Ogden boys’ basketball team opened the season with a resounding 85-19 victory at home over Cissna Park in first-round action of the Toyota of Danville Classic.
Ty Pence led the way with 23 points. Tanner Siems collected 17 points, Tanner Jacob had 13 points and Brock Trimble netted 11 points.
The Spartans connected on 60 percent of their shots from the field (36 of 60), including a 6-for-6 performance from Jacob.
Pence pulled down five rebounds and McGwire Atwood gathered four rebounds. Assist leaders, with three apiece, were Atwood, Jacob and Kendrick Johnson.
On Wednesday (Nov. 30), Pence posted a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and the Spartans dealt Notre Dame de La Salette a 65-21 loss.
Coy Taylor and Trimble each scored 12 points. Trimble was 4-for-4 from three-point range and after two games has hit 7-of-9 three-point attempts.
Jacob collected five points, five rebounds and shared the team-lead in assists with Pence. Each totaled four.
SJ-O (2-0) returns to action on Friday (Dec. 2) at 8 p.m. against Watseka (2-4). With a win, the Spartans will advance into the 5:30 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 3) championship game.
