SJ-O girls basketball competes at State Farm Classic

Fifth-seeded Sherrard handed the 12th-seeded St. Joseph-Ogden girls’ basketball team a 53-30 loss in first-round action of the State Farm Classic on Tuesday (Dec. 27) at Normal Community High School.
Taylor Hug led the Spartans with 11 points. She tossed in three shots from three-point range. Addy Martinie scored eight points and Addie Seggebruch chipped in with six points.
Sherrard jumped into a 12-4 lead after one quarter.
On Wednesday (Dec. 28), SJ-O was downed by fourth-seeded Winnebago, 60-25, at Bloomington High School. The Spartans also lost to 16th-seeded Stanford Olympia, 62-41, on Thursday at Normal Community High School.
Against Winnebago, Addison Frick led the Spartans with 10 points. Hug netted six points.
Winnebago pushed into a 22-7 lead after one quarter and expanded its margin to 38-15 at halftime. The Spartans were held scoreless in the fourth stanza.
Against Olympia, Martinie posted season-high totals of 21 points and five three-pointers. Seggebruch matched her season’s high with 13 points. Frick tallied five points.
Olympia held leads of 16-10 after one quarter and 30-24 at halftime.
SJ-O (6-10) returns to action on Thursday (Dec. 29) at 9 a.m. against 15th-seeded Riverdale at Normal Community High School in the 15th-place game.
