Comets open New Year with win over Hoopeston Area

Behind season-high performances from Dalton Hobick and Josh Ruch, the Oakwood Comets opened the 2023 portion of their boys’ basketball season on Tuesday (Jan. 3) with a 66-58 Vermilion Valley Conference victory at home over Hoopeston Area.
Hobick meshed eight three-point shots on the way to a 37-point outburst. Ruch tallied 17 points.
Hobick scored 10 points apiece in both the second and fourth quarters. Brody Taflinger matched his season’s high with 14 points.
Oakwood won despite making just 7 of 18 free throws.
The Comets, who reached their best team scoring total of the season, are 12-5 overall with a three-game winning streak. Oakwood will return to action on Friday (Jan. 6) at Chrisman. Hoopeston Area has an 8-8 season mark.
