Spartans win three dual-meets at home

Two St. Joseph-Ogden senior wrestlers won three matches by pin on Saturday as the Spartans swept to three dual-meet victories at home.
Peyton Sarver (195 pounds) and Owen Birt (220 pounds) each produced three pins. Two of Sarver’s falls came in 39 seconds. Birt had two first-period pins.
As a team, SJ-O defeated Hoopeston Area, 53-26, Decatur MacArthur, 54-21, and Decatur Lutheran, 72-9.
Other Spartans who were undefeated for the day were Jackson Walsh (106 pounds), Holden Brazelton (132 pounds), Landon Butts (138 pounds) and Quincy Jones (285 pounds).
Walsh, Butts and Jones all secured two wins by pin. Brazelton had one pin to go with a 16-0 technical fall victory.
Jones’ quickest fall was in 32 seconds, Butts’ fastest was in 44 seconds and Walsh posted a pin in one minute.
SJ-O wrestlers who were 2-1 for the day were Emmitt Holt (113 pounds), Coy Hays (152 pounds), Devan Swisher (160 pounds) and Hunter Ketchum (182 pounds).
Hays finished off two opponents with pins (the fastest in 1 minute and 28 seconds). Holt, Swisher and Ketchum all registered one pin.
Ketchum’s pin came in 22 seconds, Holt’s came in 3:28 and Swisher’s in 5:41.
Two Spartans with one win for the day logged it by pin: Brandon Goodwin (in 3:48 at 126 pounds) and Vance McComas (in 29 seconds at 145 pounds).
Maddie Wells (120 pounds) and Carson Sarnecki (170 pounds) picked up forfeit wins.
On Thursday (Jan. 19), four SJ-O wrestlers went 2-0 as the Spartans split two dual meets at home.
SJ-O handled Clinton, 56-36, but lost to El Paso/Gridley, 76-24.
Spartans with two wins were Holt (113 pounds), Wells (120 pounds), Brazelton (132 pounds) and Birt (220 pounds).
All four had one pin, the quickest being in 1 minute and 14 seconds by Birt. Holt also secured a 20-3 technical fall win.
Other SJ-O athletes with pins were Walsh (106 pounds), Davin Alverez (145 pounds), Hays (152 pounds) and Ketchum (182 pounds).
At 138 pounds, Butts registered a 16-0 technical fall victory. Gary Page (113 pounds) received a forfeit win.
SJ-O (18-16 in dual meets) returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 28) in the Quincy Notre Dame Tournament.
