By Fred Kroner
Sophomore Thomas Wells was a two-event winner for the Oakwood boys’ track and field team on Monday (March 27) as the Comets placed third in an eight-school outdoor meet at Hoopeston Area.
Wells dominated the distance races, prevailing in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events.
Six other Comets secured finishes among the top five as did five of the school’s relays.
Bryson McDaniel was a two-event placer, ending as the runner-up in the triple jump and adding a fifth-place finish in the long jump.
Connor Smith (400 meters) and Ben Darling (3,200 meters) each placed third.
Jakob Rupp (800 meters) and Doug Myers (discus) were each fourth.
Winding up in fifth place was Saul Carrillo (400 meters).
The top Oakwood relay was the 3,200-meter foursome of Kaden McDaniel, Grant Brewer, Alex Wells and Rupp. That group placed second.
The 400-meter relay captured third. Sharing the baton were Smith, Carrillo, Macen Phillips and Bryson McDaniel.
Also finishing in third place was the 1,600-meter relay unit of Smith, Carrillo, Jacob Pricer and Kaden McDaniel.
The Comets entered a second 1,600-meter relay and it finished fourth. That quartet consisted of Sailer Harrison, Brewer, Thomas Wells and Phillips.
Oakwood’s 800-meter relay placed fourth. The relay runners were Kaden McDaniel, Tucker Pesek, Pricer and Noah Phillips.
Oakwood will return to action on Thursday (April 6) in the Vermilion County meet, also at Hoopeston Area.
