By Fred Kroner
Sophomore hurdler Alyssa Wells and the 800-meter relay team secured wins for Oakwood on Thursday (March 30) in a six-team girls’ track and field meet at Tuscola.
Wells was triumphant in the 300-meter hurdles race. Her time was 57.69 seconds.
Sharing the baton on the 800-meter relay were Taylor Smoot, Luci Morris, Taylor Jett and Aubri Elliott. The same four runners helped Oakwood to a runner-up finish in the 400-meter relay.
Their combined time in the 800 relay was 2:04.34, which provided them a 1.98-second margin of victory.
The Comets finished third in the team standings with 47 points. They ended behind Tuscola (203 points) and Heritage (56 points).
Morris (third in the long jump), Smooth (fifth in the 400 meters) and Elliott (fifth in the 100 meters) all had noteworthy performances in individual events. The Comets also received a fifth-place effort from Quinn Sperry in the shot put.
One of the Comets’ other relays also fared well. The 1,600-meter foursome of Jett, Cassie Fugate, Wells and Elliott took third.
Seven Comets secured their season-best marks, including shot-putters Sperry (26 feet 10 inches) and Mady Nicoson (22 feet, 8 inches).
Fugate produced her best times in both the 200 meters (34.40) and the 400 meters (1:20.64). Teammates with their top marks were Morris in the long (14 feet, 5 inches), Smoot in the 400 meters (1:16.51) and Wells in the 100 meters (15.41 seconds).
Oakwood returns to action on Tuesday (April 4) at Paxton-Buckley-Loda.
