Vivian Smith wins discus competition at Mt. Zion

Seventh-grader Vivian Smith was the lone individual winner for the St. Joseph seventh-grade girls’ track and field team on Saturday (April 29) at the Mount Zion Junior High Invitational.

Smith won the discus with a personal-best toss of 85 feet, 10 inches. She finished 9 feet, 1 ½ inches ahead of the second-place performer.

Smith was also the runner-up in the shot put (personal-best 26-7).

Six of her Panther teammates who landed in the top 10 individually also reached their personal-best marks: Tessa Walker (third in the 1,600 meters in 6:00.51), Tabby Brown (fourth in the 800 meters in 2:46.64), Mia Miller (sixth in the 800 meters in 2:57.14), Avarie Dietiker (seventh in the 1,600 meters in 6:14.98), Kennedi Dean (ninth in the 400 meters in 1:12.17) and Olivia Edington (10th in the 200 meters in 31.80 seconds).

The school’s other top-10 individuals were Edington (third in the pole vault at 6-0), Dean (eighth in the pole vault at 5-0) and Marissa Smith (eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 21.55 seconds).

All three of the Panthers’ relays placed among the top eight in the seventh-grade division.

The 1,600-meter grouping of Dietiker, Walker, Brown and Miller ran fourth in 4:52.07.

Handling the baton for the fifth-place 800-meter relay were Edington, Avery Haley, Candice Wright and Ainsley Freeman. Their cumulative time was 2:09.11.

St Joseph’s 400-meter relay wound up in eighth place.

The runners were Addison Knight, Sophia Chahine, Charlee Christians and Addi Stevens. Their time was 1:04.71.

Among the school’s sixth-graders who fared well in the meet were Brown, Dean and Miller.

The seventh-graders scored 41 points and placed fifth in the team standings. Mount Zion captured first place with 142 points.

Hayden Dahl was the top placer for the St. Joseph eighth-grade girls’ track and field team on Saturday (April 29) in the 13-school Mount Zion Junior High Invitational.

Dahl was the runner-up in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 25 feet, 8 inches.

Two of her teammates who placed among the top 10 individually also registered personal-best performances.

Lizzie Clark was sixth in the discus (53-8) and Abi Crider tied for eighth in the long jump (13-3 ½). Crider tied with teammate Kiah Riesel in the event.

The team’s other top performers were Sophie Schmitz (tied for fifth in the pole vault at 6-6), Mia Jones (seventh in the 800 meters in 2:57.02 and seventh in the pole vault at 6-0), and Faith Jackson (10th in the 400 meters in 1:12.76.

Two of the Panthers’ relays placed fifth.

Joining forces on the 800-meter relay were Riesel, Iris Davis, Lilly Ahart and Crider. Their time was 2:00.11.

The 1,600-meter relay featured Riesel, Jackson, Ahart and Crider. They crossed the finish line in 4:40.8.

Mahomet-Seymour was the eighth-grade team champion with 92 ½ points. St. Joseph placed eighth with 14 ½ points.

St. Joseph will return to action on Saturday (May 6) in the Unity Invitational in Tolono.
