Tiernan breaks school record in win over Heyworth
By Fred Kroner
Travis Tiernan earned his school-record 10th pitching victory of the season on Monday (May 15), working three innings of relief as Oakwood held off Heyworth, 3-2, in a non-conference baseball game on the road.
Tiernan (10-0) allowed two hits and no walks. He struck out four hitters. Tiernan was previously tied for the Oakwood season wins record with Phillip Huchel (1988) and Casey Fletcher (2010).
The Comets were held to four hits. Two were by Derek Drews. Cort Vermillion produced one hit and two RBI. Bryson Myers had the other hit and also scored a run.
Dalton Hobick, who broke his own single-season school-record for stolen bases with his 37th, tallied the team’s other run. As a junior in 2022, Hobick set the stolen bases mark with 36.
Alec Harrison pitched the first two innings. He walked two batters and fanned one. Hobick worked the last two innings and registered one strikeout.
Sixth-seeded Oakwood (24-6-1) returns to action on Thursday (May 18) at 4:30 p.m. in a semifinal game of the St. Joseph-Ogden Class 2A Regional against fourth-seeded Westville. The game will be played at Meier Field.
