St. Joseph-Ogden boys’ cross country dominates Cow Chip Classic

The St. Joseph-Ogden boys’ cross-country team dominated in the 23-school Chrisman Cowchip Classic on Saturday (Sept. 2).
In a flighted race where there were seven individual races as well as an open race, SJ-O runners were triumphant in all eight races and ran away with team honors.
In the race for No. 1 runners, Spartan senior Carson Maroon was the winner with a 3-mile time of 16 minutes, 32.6 seconds.
In the race for No. 2 runners, SJ-O’s Aden Armstrong – also a senior – claimed first with a time of 16:57.6.
They had the day’s two fastest times, regardless of which flight they were in.
In the race for No. 3 runners, SJ-O sophomore Lance Retz won with a time of 17:55.6.
In the race for No. 4 runners, SJ-O junior Jack Fisher crossed the finish line in 17:19.8, the fifth-best overall time of the day.
In the race for No. 5 runners, Spartan senior Holden Jones captured the top spot with a time of 18:23.2.
In the race for No. 6 runners, freshman Nate Farney was victorious in 18:18.1.
In the race for No. 7 runners, freshman Collin Burnett registered a winning time of 17:56.6.
In the open race – for athletes not entered in any other race – SJ-O junior Mason Guido prevailed by 33.7 seconds, with a time of 18:12.0. Teammate Joe Griebat was third in the open race (19:26.7), Cyrus Zadeh was eighth (20:56.2) and E.J. Beckett was 11th (21:17.1) in a race with 42 competitors.
Varsity team scores were compiled by adding the overall place for each school’s seven runners.
Meet champion SJ-O had a score of 66 points. Urbana Uni High was second (102 points) followed by Tolono Unity (146 points).
SJ-O will return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 5) at Kickapoo State Park against Oakwood/Salt Fork, Armstrong-Potomac and Hoopeston Area.
