Franzen places third at Chrisman Regional
By Fred Kroner
All-Regional runner Savanna Franzen helped St. Joseph-Ogden’s girls’ cross-country team land a sectional berth by virtue of their performance on Saturday (Oct. 21) at the Chrisman Class 1A Regional.
SJ-O placed fifth in the regional. The top seven schools automatically qualified for the upcoming Decatur St. Teresa Sectional.
Franzen ran the 3-mile course in 20 minutes, 4.86 seconds and ended in third place. The first five finishers were accorded All-Regional laurels.
Senior teammate Chloe Burkhalter finished in seventh place (20:48.33).
The Spartans’ other regional entries were freshman Kiah Riessl (37th in 23:42.41), sophomore Hannah Mock (39th in 24:02.70) and sophomore Sydney Steinbach (40th in 24:09.37).
SJ-O returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 28) in the St. Teresa Sectional, which will be held at South Shores Park, in Decatur, with the girls’ race beginning at 10 a.m.
To advance to state from the 21-school meet, teams need to finish among the top six. Individuals can qualify for state – if they are not on an advancing team – by placing among the first 10 runners not on an advancing team.
