Spartans kick off basketball season with win over AL/AH

Luke Landrus scored 14 of his game-high 16 points in the first half on Tuesday (Nov. 28) as the St. Joseph-Ogden boys’ basketball team opened their season with an 80-21 thrashing of Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond in first-round action of the Toyota of Danville Classic at SJ-O.
The Spartans led, 43-9, at halftime.
Tanner Jacob and Logan Smith each hit eight first-half points. Smith finished with 10 points. Jacob totaled eight points.
In all, 12 Spartans reached the scoring column, including Ryker Lockhart, who hit 12 points off the bench.
Other scoring leaders for SJ-O were Collin Thomey (nine points), Coy Taylor (six points), Will Haley (five points), Parker Fitch (four points), Asher Pruemer (three points), Tanner Siems (three points), Tim Blackburn-Kelley (two points) and Logan Lackey (two points).
The Spartans were 3-for-6 from the free throw line and all of the attempts were in the first quarter. SJ-O also sank seven three-point shots, including three by Landrus. Making one trey apiece were Haley, Lockhart, Pruemer and Thomey.
Jacob and Siems gathered five rebounds apiece. Handling four rebounds each were Fitch and Landrus. Lockhart handed out four assists and Blackburn-Kelley had three assists.
The Spartans made 35 of 62 shots from the field (56.5 percent). Landrus was 6-for-8 from the field. Lockhart and Smith were both 5-for-7.
SJ-O (1-0) returns to action on Thursday (Nov. 30) against Paxton-Buckley-Loda, which also won its opener, but lost on Wednesday (Nov. 29).
