Comets win three at SJO Classic

Senior Alec Harrison and junior Jackson Dudley were named to the all-tournament team for Oakwood’s Comets, which placed second in the Toyota of Danville Classic boys’ basketball tournament at SJ-O.
In the championship game, Oakwood was bested by the host Spartans, 74-42, on Saturday (Dec. 2). The Comets reached the finals by topping Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 54-53, in two overtimes on Thursday (Nov. 30).
Against SJ-O, Carsen Dudley fired in a team-high 15 points. Bryson McDaniel hit eight points, Brody Taflinger collected six points, Cort Vermillion had four points, as did Alex Wallace. Jackson Dudley scored three points and Harrison contributed two points.
SJ-O took a 26-8 lead into the second quarter and held a 49-19 halftime cushion.
Carsen Dudley (two), Jackson Dudley (one), Taflinger (one) and Wallace (one) all hit three-point shots. The Comets were 17-for-31 from the free throw line.
Against PBL, Carsen Dudley led the Comets with 16 points. Jackson Dudley swished 12 points, Harrison had 10 points and Vermillion finished with nine points. Other scoring leaders for the team were Brandt Hobick (four points), Taflinger (two points) and McDaniel (one point).
Oakwood led, 10-8, after one quarter and 20-16 at halftime. The teams were tied, 37-37, after regulation.
For the tournament, Carsen Dudley was the team’s top scorer (59 points), followed by Harrison (56 points), Jackson Dudley (40 points) and Vermillion (27 points).
The Comets (8-1) return to action on Tuesday (Dec. 5) in their home-opener against St. Thomas More.
