Prairieview Ogden’s eighth-grade girls’ basketball team will play for third place in the IESA Class 1A state tournament on Thursday (Dec. 14) against Carrollton St. John at Clinton Junior High School.
PVO has a 21-4 season record. Carrollton is 23-3. Game time is 6 p.m.
Regardless of the outcome, PVO has already assured itself of the school’s best finish by an eighth-grade girls’ basketball team.
This year was the second time that an eighth-grade girls’ basketball team from PVO qualified for state. When the 2006 squad made it, they lost in the state quarterfinals.
The current Mustangs rallied past Normal Epiphany, 20-15, on Saturday (Dec. 9) in a state quarterfinal game.
Epiphany (18-6) took a 13-11 lead into the final quarter.
Kellyn Irwin and Ella Mohr led PVO with six points apiece. Atleigh Miller connected on five points and Korinne Travis added two points.
Later Saturday, the Mustangs dropped a 38-13 decision to undefeated Washington St. Patrick (25-0) in the semifinals.
Travis hit a team-high six points. Mohr contributed three points. Both Kelsie Harms and Miller finished with two points.
PVO’s 14-player state roster includes Sydney Abernathy, Grace Bressner, Kolbie Busboom, Isabella Frerichs, Greta Goldenstein, Kelsie Harms, Makayla Hesterberg, Kellyn Irwin, Leigha Larson, Atleigh Miller, Ella Mohr, Alyssa Osterbur, Leah Pruitt and Korinne Travis.
The Mustangs are coached by Ashley Beals and assisted by Teresa Aden.
To qualify for state, PVO toppled Oakland Lake Crest, 34-27, in the sectional championship game on Wednesday (Dec. 6) at Cissna Park.
Miller scored 13 points and Travis added seven.
