Mustangs finish season in fourth at IESA State Tournament

The Prairieview Ogden eighth-grade girls’ basketball finished fourth in the IESA Class 1A state tournament, the best finish ever by a girls’ basketball team from PVO.
The Mustangs dropped a 50-20 decision to Carrollton St. John in the third-place game on Thursday (Dec. 14) at Clinton Junior High.
Kellyn Irwin hit a game-high two three-point shots and led PVO with nine points. Atleigh Miller netted five points. Rounding out the team’ scoring were three points from Greta Goldenstein, two from Isabella Frerichs and one from Makayla Hesterberg.
PVO closes the year with a 21-5 final record. Carrollton was 24-3.
The school PVO lost to in the semifinals, Washington St. Patrick, went on to claim the state championship and wrap up a 26-0 season.
Miller registered the team’s top individual scoring performances for the season with games of 21, 20 and 19 points.
She was one of six squad members to lead, or share the team-lead, in scoring.
Miller led in 20 games. Irwin led in three games and was followed by Goldenstein in two games and then Hesterberg, Ella Mohr and Korinne Travis in one game each.
