Oakwood girls’ basketball defeats Westville in VCC tournament

Led by Nikita Taylor’s 21 points, the Oakwood girls’ basketball team overpowered Westville, 44-24, on Wednesday (Jan. 17) in the Vermilion County Tournament at Danville Area Community College.
The Comets led, 22-12, at halftime and then held the Tigers scoreless in the third quarter.
Jaydah Arrowsmith tallied 13 points for Oakwood. Teammates Gracie Hanner and Rylee Wright contributed five and three points, respectively. Taylor Smoot scored two points.
On Monday (Jan. 15), Oakwood fell to Hoopeston Area, 50-44.
Arrowsmith totaled 21 points and meshed two three-point shots. Luci Morris hit eight points. Hanner and Taylor each netted five points. Wright finished with three points and Bella Bradford added two points.
The Comets led, 11-7, after one quarter, but had fallen behind, 25-19, by halftime.
Oakwood (8-17) returns to action in the tournament’s fifth-place game on Friday (Jan. 19) at DACC against Armstrong-Potomac.
