Comets place second at Vermilion County basketball tournament

Top-seeded Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin upended second-seeded Oakwood, 62-50, on Saturday (Jan. 20) in the championship game of the boys’ Vermilion County basketball tournament at Danville Area Community College.

Alec Harrison led the Comets with 16 points. Carsen Dudley tallied 13 points and Cort Vermillion netted 11 points. Jackson Dudley and Brody Taflinger both contributed four points. Bryson McDaniel added two points.

The Dudley brothers were Oakwood’s representatives on the all-tournament team.

B-H/R-A held a slender 18-16 lead after one quarter, but moved into a 38-29 advantage at halftime.

On Thursday (Jan. 18), the Comets moved into the title game by thrashing third-seeded Hoopeston Area, 76-44, in a game that was played at Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin High School.

Jackson Dudley tallied a team-high 16 points. Carsen Dudley swished five three-pointers and ended with 15 points. His last 13 baskets have all come from three-point range.

Vermillion notched 13 points and Taflinger ended with 11 points. Harrison hit eight points and McDaniel totaled five points. Derek Drews and Brandt Hobick tossed in three points. Hayden Thompson had the Comes’ other two points.

Oakwood led, 23-10, after one quarter and 45-20 at halftime.

For the week-long tournament, Harrison was the team’s top scorer, hitting 62 points in four games. Carsen Dudley hit 44 points and Vermillion had 35 points while Jackson Dudley and Taflinger each finished with 33 points.

The Comets (17-6) return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 23) at Georgetown-Ridge Farm.
