A Legacy of Care: Celebrating Theresa Hooker’s 31 Years at Heritage School District
Theresa Hooker, who has touched the lives of hundreds as a devoted aide at Heritage School District for over three decades, is ready to open a new chapter in life as she retires at the culmination of the 2023-24 school year.
Hooker began her journey at Heritage as a personal aide, quickly becoming an integral part of the school community.
“I have been working at Heritage for 31 years,” she said. “I was hired as a personal aide and then later worked in the library part of the time. I also monitored students with health issues, helped with sewing classes, and FCCLA,” Theresa reflects on her multifaceted role.
Her commitment extended beyond just academic support. Theresa’s work with special needs students has been particularly impactful, a role she found profoundly rewarding.
“Working with special needs students and being a part of their success in accomplishing their goals is very rewarding. They have taught me so much,” she shares.
Before joining Heritage, Theresa was a stay-at-home mother, a role that she cherished until her children began school. The transition to becoming an aide was a seamless fit, harmonizing with her family life.
“Becoming an aide was not hard. I always used to think, ‘What if that were my child?’ I would hope someone who was caring and understanding and willing to help would be with them,” she explains.
“Back when I started working, being different or learning in a different way was not as accepted as it is now. I’m so glad to see how much that has changed over the years.”
One of her career highlights was her involvement in the STEP program, which assists students in securing employment.
“I think the most memorable moment was being a part of a program called STEP that helped students get a job and be a part of them feeling that they were just like everyone else,” Theresa recalls.
Colleagues and students alike remember Theresa not only for her dedication but also for her warmth and camaraderie. “I have always had good people to work with and will miss them,” she says, reflecting on the relationships built over the years.
Looking ahead to retirement, Theresa has no grand plans but looks forward to spending quality time with her family and indulging in her hobbies such as gardening, sewing, crocheting, and knitting. Her husband’s recent gift of an embroidery machine is sure to keep her busy, a nod to their shared humor and love for life.
“He said it would help keep me busy,” Theresa said. Together, they also plan to enjoy more time outdoors, camping, and exploring nature.
