Join the community at Lake of the Woods Peninsula, within the serene expanse of Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, on Sunday, June 2, for an enchanting evening with rhythm and blues legend Candy Foster and his band, Shades of Blue. Part of the Summer Concert Series, this free event from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM promises to kick off your summer with soulful melodies set against the backdrop of beautiful lake scenery.

Candy Foster, an iconic figure in the Central Illinois music scene, has spent over six decades captivating audiences with his dynamic performances and distinctive voice. At 86 years young, Foster’s passion for music is more vibrant than ever, showcasing his ability to connect with fans across generations.

Candy Foster is revered not just for his enduring vocal talent and charismatic stage presence, but also for his significant contributions to the Central Illinois music scene over the decades. Foster’s musical journey began in his hometown of Danville, Illinois, where he was first inspired by his mother, a jazz singer rehearsing at home. From a young age, Foster was magnetically drawn to music, spending countless hours at local record stores discovering and learning a variety of musical genres.

Despite his initial shyness, Foster found his voice in the vibrant doo-wop scenes of his youth, and later, through performances in high school. His move to Champaign in 1959 marked the beginning of a professional career that would see him navigating the challenges and triumphs of the music industry with remarkable resilience. During the Vietnam War era, while juggling a job and a growing family, Foster made his mark with The Soul Brothers, performing for soldiers at military bases across the Midwest.

In the 1960s and 70s, Foster’s career flourished on the “Chitlin’ Circuit,” where he performed alongside and opened for icons such as BB King and Koko Taylor. This circuit was crucial for Black artists during a time when mainstream venues were often inaccessible due to racial barriers.

Beyond performing, Foster’s contributions to his community include the establishment of the Candy Foster Scholarship at Parkland College, aimed at supporting young artists pursuing careers in the arts. His extensive charity work and his dedication to keeping live entertainment thriving have earned him numerous awards and the keys to the cities of Champaign and Urbana.

Foster’s band, Shades of Blue, reflects his vision of a complete and compelling musical experience, featuring a full horn section and backup singers that complement his rich, emotive vocal style. This upcoming concert is not only a chance to enjoy great music but also to celebrate the legacy of a musician who has spent a lifetime perfecting his craft and enriching the cultural fabric of the region.
