Public Outcry Over Illinois American Water Rate Hike to be Addressed at ICC Forums

This week, residents of Champaign and surrounding areas will have a significant opportunity to voice their frustrations over proposed water and wastewater rate hikes at two public forums scheduled by the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). Illinois American Water’s proposed $152 million rate hike could see private water customers facing an increase of nearly $30 per month.

The forums are set to provide a platform for customers to share their experiences and concerns regarding the high water bills they have been dealing with for years.

The forum will take place on Tuesday, July 23, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Champaign Public Library, Robeson Pavilion Room AB, 200 W. Green Street, Champaign.

For years, CUB has been receiving complaints from Illinois American Water customers about escalating water bills. In their latest investigation into the rate-hike request, CUB uncovered nearly $50 million in overcharges. This has led to increased scrutiny and advocacy from the organization, which recently held a news conference in Bolingbrook alongside state Rep. Dagmara Avelar of Romeoville, state Sen. Sue Rezin of Morris, state Rep. Nabeela Syed of Palatine, and state Sen. Rachel Ventura of Joliet.

The forums come at a crucial time as many residents feel the pinch of high utility costs and are looking for relief. The ICC’s decision on the rate hike will significantly impact these customers, making their participation and voices at these forums all the more critical.

For more information or to arrange an interview with CUB representatives, please contact the Citizens Utility Board directly.
