Historic Buildings Open to Public for Tours in Vermilion County
On Sunday, September 1, 2024, visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore the rich history of Vermilion County as two of its most cherished parks open their doors for public tours. The Vermilion County Conservation District has announced that both the Nature Center and Pioneer Homestead Cabin at Forest Glen Preserve, as well as the Bunker Hill Historic Area buildings at Kennekuk County Park, will be staffed with volunteers and available for guided tours from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
At Forest Glen Preserve, located at 20301 E. 900 North Road, Westville, IL, visitors can immerse themselves in the natural history of the region. The Nature Center offers interactive displays and exploration tables, allowing guests to learn about the diverse plants and animals native to Vermilion County. The Pioneer Homestead Cabin provides a glimpse into the lives of early settlers, showcasing the challenges and triumphs of life in the county’s early days.
Simultaneously, the Bunker Hill Historic Area at Kennekuk County Park will transport visitors back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Located at 22296-A Henning Road, Danville, IL, the site features several historic buildings, including the Neff Grocery Store, Atwood Home, Bismarck Train Depot, Red Oak School, Old Time Print Shop, and the Mack and Son Barber Shop. Each of these locations offers a window into life from the 1890s to the 1940s.
Adding to the day’s nostalgic atmosphere, the Redbud String Band will perform at the Gazebo in the Bunker Hill Historic Area, delighting attendees with two sets at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The band’s repertoire includes a mix of American old-time music, Celtic tunes, Civil War-era pieces, and early 20th-century ragtime. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the music while taking in the historic surroundings.
These events are made possible through the efforts of dedicated volunteers who staff the buildings and lead the tours. For those interested in contributing to the preservation and education of Vermilion County’s history, volunteer opportunities are available.
