Illinois Introduces New Law to Foster Student Wellness Through Relaxation Activities

Illinois has enacted a new law that encourages school districts to incorporate relaxation activities into the school week. The legislation, part of a broader focus on education and health, aims to provide students with crucial skills to manage stress and promote mental and physical health.

Under the new Section 27-23.17 of the School Code, schools across the state may now offer at least 20 minutes per week of activities specifically designed to help students relax. These activities can include a wide range of practices such as yoga, meditation, guided relaxation, and mindful-based movements, among others.

This initiative recognizes the growing need for mental health support within educational settings, spurred by increasing awareness of the pressures facing today’s students. By incorporating relaxation techniques into the curriculum, Illinois is taking a significant step towards addressing these challenges head-on.

The law also allows for flexibility in how these activities are implemented. Schools can integrate them into existing classes like physical education or social-emotional learning, or they can introduce new classes devoted to relaxation and stress relief. Additionally, schools are encouraged to partner with both public and private community organizations, leveraging local resources to enhance the offerings.
