Illinois to Provide Coverage for At-Home Pregnancy Tests Under New Law

In a significant step towards enhancing women’s healthcare accessibility, the State of Illinois has passed a new law mandating coverage for at-home, urine-based pregnancy tests. The law, officially titled Public Act 103-0870, was enacted to ensure that individuals have easier access to early pregnancy detection.

Starting January 1, 2025, all group or individual health insurance policies and managed care plans in Illinois that are amended, delivered, issued, or renewed will be required to cover at-home pregnancy tests prescribed to the insured. This new coverage will allow for the provision of up to two at-home pregnancy tests every 30 days.

Additionally, the Illinois Public Aid Code has been amended to ensure that the medical assistance program also provides coverage for these pregnancy tests. Beginning in 2025, tests can be ordered directly by clinicians or furnished through standing orders for patient use. The coverage under this amendment is limited to a multipack of tests every 30 days, as defined by the Department.
