Relics and Revelations: Civil War Stories Brings History to Life in Mahomet

On Saturday, April 12, the Museum of the Grand Prairie will host Relics and Revelations: Civil War Stories 2025, an engaging event commemorating the enduring legacy of the American Civil War. Scheduled from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, this free, family-friendly program offers a unique opportunity to explore the history and culture of one of America’s most defining conflicts.

The Civil War, which began in April 1861 and concluded in April 1865, saw over 250,000 Illinois residents enlist in the Union Army, including many from Champaign County. This event will delve into their stories and sacrifices through a variety of interactive activities. Visitors can view authentic Civil War-era artifacts, enjoy live music from the period, and even meet a reenactor portraying President Abraham Lincoln.

The Museum of the Grand Prairie, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the natural and cultural history of Champaign County and East Central Illinois. Its permanent exhibits include topics such as blacksmithing on the prairie and Abraham Lincoln’s early connections to the region.

No registration is required for this event, but children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or disability-related accommodations, attendees can contact museum staff via phone or email.
