Champaign County landowners have a unique opportunity to enhance local wildlife habitats through a seed distribution event hosted by the Champaign County Chapter of Pheasants Forever (CCPF). The event will take place on Saturday, April 19, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Illini FS parking lot, located at 1509 E. University Ave., Urbana. Attendees should look for the white CCPF trailer.
Seeds for Wildlife and Pollinator Habitats
CCPF will provide various seed types tailored for wildlife habitat improvement, including:
- Sorghum and sunflower seeds for food plots.
- Grasses for nesting and winter cover.
- Forbs (wildflowers) that support pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies.
Bruce Stikkers, CCPF Habitat Chair, will be on-site to offer expert advice on selecting and planting the appropriate species for different land conditions and habitat goals.
Free Seed Options for Landowners
The event offers free food plot seed to all Champaign County landowners. Additional seed types, such as grasses and legumes, are available free of charge for plantings up to five acres for landowners not enrolled in USDA conservation programs. For larger plantings exceeding five acres, cost-sharing arrangements will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
However, CCPF does not provide free seed for land enrolled in USDA conservation programs, as those programs typically reimburse most seed costs. Despite this, the chapter offers free use of planting equipment to all landowners.
Unable to Attend? Alternative Arrangements Available
Landowners unable to attend the event can still obtain seed by contacting Bruce Stikkers directly at 760-793-5825 or via email at bjstikkers@sbcglobal.net.
This initiative is part of CCPF’s broader commitment to improving wildlife habitats in Champaign County. By offering free resources and expert guidance, the chapter aims to encourage sustainable practices that benefit local ecosystems and support pollinators critical to agriculture and biodiversity.
