Centennial Park in Champaign will transform into a wonderland of wheels and sirens on Wednesday, May 14, as families gather for the annual Touch-A-Truck Day. The event, running from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., invites children to climb aboard, honk horns, and explore a variety of large vehicles, including tow trucks, fire trucks, police cars, and more.
The day kicks off with a special sensory-friendly hour from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., designed for children who benefit from a quieter environment. During this time, lights, sirens, and horns will be turned off to accommodate sensory-sensitive guests, ensuring all families can enjoy the experience comfortably.
Organizers encourage families to pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic in the park as part of the festivities. The event is free and promises hands-on fun for children of all ages, offering a unique opportunity to interact with the vehicles and the professionals who operate them.
A parking update has been issued: attendees are reminded not to park in the lot just south of Jefferson Middle School on Sangamon Drive near Crescent Drive, as it is school property and vehicles may be towed.
In the event of inclement weather, Touch-A-Truck Day will be cancelled. For questions or further information, families can contact the Champaign Park District at merry.mitchell@champaignparks.org or call 217-819-3961.
