Families and fishing enthusiasts are invited to enjoy a morning of free fishing fun at the annual “Take Me Fishing” event, set for Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Activity Center in the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve.
The event, organized by the Champaign County Forest Preserve District, offers a welcoming environment for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Beginners can take advantage of basic fishing instruction, while cane poles and bait will be provided for those who need them-though participants are welcome to bring their own gear.
Children will have the opportunity to compete for awards in several categories, including Most Fish, Biggest Fish, and the Good Sport Award, making the event both fun and engaging for young anglers. All fishing will be catch-and-release, and no fishing license is required for participants 15 and under. However, adult supervision is mandatory for children in this age group.
The Middle Fork River is known for its diverse fish populations, including smallmouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, walleye, and bullhead, making it an ideal spot for a family fishing outing.
The event is free and open to all ages. For more information or to request disability-related modifications, attendees can contact Chelsea at cprahl@ccfpd.org or call (217) 896-2455.
