Get Covered Illinois Extends Health Insurance Enrollment Deadline to January 31

Illinois residents are getting more time to sign up for health insurance through the state’s official marketplace after Get Covered Illinois announced a special enrollment deadline extension to January 31, 2026.

The decision gives consumers an additional 16 days beyond the original cutoff to apply for and enroll in coverage, with plans starting February 1, 2026.

“We are seeing record numbers of customers finding more affordable coverage by taking the time to shop for and compare plans” said Morgan Winters, Director of Get Covered Illinois. “As a state-based marketplace, not only do we now have the authority to offer this special enrollment extension, but we also have more resources to support our customers in finding affordable health coverage options.”

Officials said the extension is aimed at ensuring more Illinois residents have the opportunity to review their options, secure coverage, and take advantage of financial assistance available under the Affordable Care Act.

Get Covered Illinois, now operating as a fully state-based marketplace, reported strong interest from consumers exploring plans and subsidies for 2026 coverage. The extra enrollment window is intended to help those who may have started but not completed applications, as well as residents who have yet to compare their options.

Illinois has invested nearly 7 million dollars in navigator grants to expand free, in-person and virtual enrollment assistance across the state. The marketplace has also built what it describes as a strong certified broker network.

“There are more than 140 navigators and 9,000 brokers located around the state who stand ready to help our customers apply for and enroll in quality health coverage,” said Ezra Watland, Chief Operating Officer at Get Covered Illinois. “I recommend anyone needing health coverage or who hasn’t taken the time to compare their options, use this additional time to reach out to a broker or navigator.”

Navigators and brokers can help residents understand plan options, determine eligibility for financial assistance, and complete the enrollment process. These services are free to Illinois residents and available in multiple languages.

Residents have until January 31, 2026, to enroll in coverage that will begin February 1, 2026.

Illinoisans can:

  • Shop and enroll in plans through the Get Covered Illinois website.
  • Use the online directory to connect with local navigators and licensed brokers.
  • Call the Get Covered Illinois Customer Assistance Center at 1-866-311-1119 (TTY: 711), which is offering extended hours through January 31.
