Sap to Syrup: Maple Tapping Returns to Homer Lake This February

Ever wondered how maple syrup makes its journey from tree sap to your breakfast table? The Champaign County Forest Preserve District is inviting the public to discover that process firsthand at “Sap to Syrup: Exploring Maple Tapping in East Central Illinois 2026.” The event will take place on February 28 at 10:00 a.m. at the Salt Fork Center within Homer Lake Forest Preserve.

Registration is required.

This hands-on educational program explores the history and science behind maple sugaring, a tradition rooted in North American forests for centuries. Participants will visit the preserve’s 200-year-old Sugar Maple Grove, learn how to tap maple trees, and find out how sap is boiled down to create pure maple syrup. Attendees will even get the chance to sample freshly made syrup during the guided session.

The event is open to all ages, though every person must be registered in advance. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and families can choose to attend either the morning or afternoon session. A second round of programs will also be offered in March for those unable to attend the February date.

Registration is now open online—
