Nature enthusiasts and owl lovers are invited to search for owls under the glow of a full moon at the Moonlight Owl Prowl, taking place February 1 at Kennekuk County Park in Danville.
Hosted by the Vermilion County Conservation District, the program capitalizes on the peak activity period for local owl populations during winter breeding and nesting season. Despite frigid temperatures, the winter months offer ideal opportunities to observe and hear these nocturnal raptors as they prepare for spring reproduction.
The Moonlight Owl Prowl combines indoor education with outdoor exploration. Participants will begin with an indoor presentation covering owl adaptations, behavior, and ecology before venturing outside for a guided hike designed to locate and identify owls through sight and sound.
Registration is $5 per person and can be completed online at MoonlightOwlProwl.eventbrite.com. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult during the program.
Participants should meet at the Kennekuk Education Center, located at 22296 Henning Road in Kennekuk County Park. Attendees are advised to dress warmly for outdoor conditions.
