Balanced scoring helped Oakwood on Friday (Feb. 5) to a come-from-behind 67-42 non-conference boys’ basketball win against Cissna Park in its season-opener.

“We got off to a slow start, but played well after that,” coach Jeff Mandrell said. “We had good balance with four players in double figures.”

The visitors led 19-15 after one quarter, but managed just six second-period points as the Comets surged into a 34-25 halftime lead.

Sophomore Dalton Hobick scored 11 of his 16 points during the second quarter.

Oakwood’s Brevin Wells hit a game-high 18 points, including nine in the opening stanza. Wells nailed two three-pointers and made all four of his free throw attempts.

Also reaching double figures in the Comets’ opener were Josh Young (13 points) and Isaiah Ruch (10 points).

Wells and Hobick were two of four squad members to sink three-point shots. Also hitting from long distance were Grant Powell and Griffin Trees.

The Comets were originally scheduled to play Salt Fork, but that game was postponed due to COVID-19 protocol at Salt Fork.

Oakwood didn’t have much time to prepare for Cissna Park.

“We found out in the middle of the week about the change in our opponent,” Mandrell said.

Oakwood returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 9) at Schlarman Academy, in Danville.
