Mustangs begin season with two wins over Armstrong-Potomac and St. Matthew

The PVO seventh-and eighth-grade boys’ basketball teams have each won two of their first three games of the season.

The seventh-graders opened with resounding wins over Armstrong-Potomac at home on Wednesday (Feb. 3) 43-3, and at Champaign St. Matthew on Monday (Feb 8) 49-9 before being edged by Schlarman Academy in Flatville on Thursday (Feb. 11) 38-35.

Coy Hayes has led – or shared – the team lead in scoring in each game. He had seven points against Armstrong-Potomac as did teammates Garrett Loschen and Graham Ray.

Seven players scored at least three points in the opener.

Against St. Matthew, Hayes was the top point-maker with 16. Ray tallied 10 points and Parker Fitch ended with eight points.

Eight PVO players reached the scoring column in the game.

Against Schlarman, Hayes hit 14 points, Fitch contributed 11 and Kodey McKinney chipped in with eight points.

Through three games, Hayes has 37 points, Fitch has 24, Ray 19, McKinney 16, Loschen 12, Vance McComas 7, Kaden Wedig 6, Adam Marschke 2, Donovan Taylor 2 and Dalton York 2.

The eighth-graders topped Armstrong-Potomac to start the season on Wednesday (Feb. 3) 51-20 before being outscored 69-58 on Monday (Feb. 8) at Champaign St. Matthew. The team returned to its winning ways at home on Thursday (Feb. 11) by edging Schlarman Academy 33-31 at home.

For the eighth-graders, Coy Taylor was the top scorer in each of the first three games, starting with a 20-point performance against Armstrong-Potomac.

Logan Lackey scored 12 points in the opener.

Taylor followed up with a 29-point outburst against St. Matthew. Parker Fitch added eight points.

Taylor tallied 18 points against Schlarman, followed by Fitch with six points.

Through three games, eight players have hit the scoring column for the eighth-graders.

Taylor leads with 67 points, followed by Lackey (22), James Huisinga (17), Fitch (16), Kodey McKinney (9), Coy Hayes (7), Tayton Gerdes (2) and Teigan Hayes (2).

PVO returns to action on Monday (Feb. 22) against Oakwood in Newtown.
