Six Comets reach end zone in Oakwood win
Oakwood’s explosive Comets ripped off nine touchdowns on Friday (March 26) and blitzed Georgetown-Ridge Farm, 66-14, in a Vermilion Valley Conference football game.
The average scoring play for the Comets, in a game played at Georgetown, was 42.2 yards.
Oakwood had six players reach the end zone, including Gaven Clouse three times and Dalton Hobick twice.
Hobick’s scores were on a 60-yard interception return and on a 92-yard run. Clouse hauled in a 55-yard pass from Brevin Wells and added rushing scores of 61 and 28 yards.
Wells completed 12 of 21 passes for 265 yards. He also scored the game’s first TD on a 5-yard run, the only Oakwood score that didn’t cover at least 24 yards.
Other Comets with TDs were Josh Young, Brady Howard and Griffin Trees, each of whom caught scoring strikes from Wells.
Howard and Hobick each had two two-point conversions. Teammates Clouse and Young each ended with one two-point conversion.
“It was a big win for us,” Oakwood coach Al Craig said. “Our offense is really starting to show that we have a ton of ways to hurt teams.
“Brevin Wells was awesome in his decision-making and seemed to always make the right decision all night.”
Clouse rushed for a team-high 116 yards. Hobick gained 95 yards on the ground.
Young caught three of Wells’ passes and turned them into gains of 95 yards. Howard gained 82 yards on his three receptions.
Tanner Pichon and Trees each finished with six tackles.
“Defensively we started out shaky, but once we found a rhythm, we were much better,” Craig said. “Really proud of our secondary. They were forcing tight throws.
Oakwood built a 44-0 lead before the Buffaloes scored a TD.
The Comets (2-0) return to action on Friday (April 2) at home against Westville.
“For our kids to come out after a long layoff and play like this in the first two weeks of the season shows how impressive this group really is,” Craig said. “They don’t get rattled and adversity isn’t going to slow them down.”
