Spartans snap tie with Oakwood, pick up victory over Tri-Valley

The unbeaten Spartans snapped a 1-1 tie against Oakwood on Monday (April 19) with a four-run third inning and topped the visiting Comets, 7-1.

University of Illinois recruit Crayton Burnett silenced Oakwood, scattering three singles over six innings. Burnett struck out 15 and walked one while throwing 66 of his 89 pitches for strikes.

Hayden Brazelton hit a home run and Spartan teammate Xander Rieches collected two hits and drove in two runs as did Burnett. Ty Pence had two hits and scored two runs.

On Wednesday (April 21), Brazelton extended his hitless streak to eight innings for the season after pitching the first five innings of a 10-0 victory against Tri-Valley in Downs.

Brazelton walked five and struck out five.

Griffin Roesch completed the no-hitter by pitching the final two innings. Roesch walked one and fanned three.

SJ-O staked Brazelton to a 4-0 led before he took the mound.

Zach Martinie was 3-for-3. Burnett had two hits – both doubles – and Rieches also collected two hits. Burnett and Keaton Nolan each drove in three runs. Andrew Beyers scored two runs.

Brazelton hit a double, marking the fifth consecutive game he had an extra-base hit.

SJ-O (5-0) returns to action on Thursday (April 22) at Urbana.
