Evan Schmitz named co-valedictorian of SJ-O Class of 2021
The end, being at the top of one’s class, isn’t always the goal for some who reach that pinnacle.
St. Joseph-Ogden’s co-valedictorian Evan Schmitz feels this way.
“I kept my grades up, as most do, but I wasn’t really working for valedictorian,” he said. “It was more of a welcome consequence of doing my homework and studying.”
Schmitz’s love of learning, or even moreso curiosity, was fostered at a young age as he watched his dad, grandpa and uncle explore the world.
“Those three seem to know practically everything: from woodworking to farming to engineering and electricity,” Schmitz said. And because of all they have learned and experienced, they can design or build practically anything between the three of them.”
Schmitz said he simply chose to walk through the door that was opened for him.
“One can choose to open it or not and open another world of possibilities,” he said.
As a student at SJ-O, Schmitz felt nothing but support.
“I was always amazed by my teachers’ determination to help their students during high school, as many went well out of their way to help anybody who needed it. My friends were also a close source of support,” he said.
“I think it’s very important to get involved to meet like-minded people that you will know for the rest of your life and get unique experiences.”
Schmitz participated in track and field, National Honor Society and band as an SJ-O student.
The Illinois State Scholar who was also chosen as UIUC’s James Scholar and Chancellor’s Scholar, will major in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois.
“After college, I plan to intern with Stark Industries to design and develop new technology,” he said.
That drive goes back to watching his family and teachers strive for something more.
“Determination is far more important than experience or knowledge,” he said.
