Denius and Morris earn top-honors at Vermilion County girls’ track and field meet

Oakwood had two individual winners in the Vermilion County girls’ track and field meet on Friday (May 7) at Hoopeston Area High School.
Senior Aaliyah Denius was the 400-meter champion. Her time of 1 minutes, 7.31 seconds gave her a one-second margin of victory.
In the 1,600 meters, Oakwood sophomore Allie Morris was victorious with a clocking of 5:44.85.
Nikita Taylor placed third in the long jump (16-0 ¾ ). The Comets also had two relays that turned in third-place performances.
The 400-meter foursome of Denius, Kalie Tison, Yelka Layden and Taylor finished in 59.61 seconds.
The school’s 1,600 unit of Tilson, Jaylynn Bugaj, Morris and Denius had a composite time of 4:54.73.
Taylor ended in eighth in the 200 meters (30.11) and was a two-event individual placer after her finish in the long jump. Layden wound up sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (1:01.63) and ninth in the 100 meters (15.21).
In the team chase, Salt Fork captured top honors in the seven-school field with 180 points. Runner-up Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin scored 126 points. Westville was third with 83 points and Oakwood ended in fourth with 39 points.
The Comets return to action on Tuesday (May 18) in the Salt Fork Invitational.
