Oakwood baseball season ends in Sectional Championship

The Comets lost a 7-4 decision on Monday (June 7) at St. Joseph-Ogden in the championship game of the Spartans’ Class 2A baseball regional.
Josh Young swatted two hits and Koby Fletcher knocked in two runs for Oakwood.
Isaiah Ruch pitched a complete game, walking four and striking out five. Ruch permitted six hits.
The Comets carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the third inning against the 32-2 Spartans.
Oakwood finished the season with a 14-10 record.
Ruch (5-2) was the team’s winningest pitcher this spring. Dalton Hobick was 3-0 and Travis Tiernan was 3-2.
Ruch led in innings pitched (47 2/3), earned run average (2.50) and strikeouts (58). Dylan Bensyl made the most appearances on the mound (11) and was second in strikeouts (28).
The team’s seniors were Dylan Bensyl, Koby Fletcher, Travis Goodner, Brady Howard, Isaiah Ruch, Jacob Spears and Cayden Wells.
Three Comets ended the season with .300, or better, batting averages, led by Ruch (.400). Other team leaders were Fletcher (.383) and Hobick (.368).
Grant Powell (27) and Hobick (22) scored the most runs. Ruch (27) and Fletcher (17) had the most RBI.
Ruch (10) had the most extra-base hits as well as the most home runs (5). Fletcher and Hobick each landed eight extra-base hits. Fletcher led in doubles (7).
Hobick had the most games (9) with two, or more, hits.
Powell (16), Jacob Spears (15) and Hobick (13) were the stolen base leaders.
For the season, Oakwood averaged 6.5 runs per game and allowed an average of 6.9 runs per game. The team posted two shutouts and was not shut out all spring.
