St. Joseph board looks at splash pad opportunity

By Isabella Zarate

In the middle of farm country, it’s often hard to find a water source to cool down during the long summer months. Especially for those who live in rural communities.

Those days may be close to over for St. Joseph, IL, a town of roughly 4,000 residents on the east side of Champaign County.

Village board members listened to a representative from Caitlin talk about how building a splash pad in their community six years ago has impacted the quality of life.

Helping the Trustees understand their process, she explained why a system that circulates water was out of their development budget, and asked that the board consider button placement and costs associated with plumbing and electricians.

Caitlin’s system was about $100,000 to develop.

Another key component will be a door-to-door campaign, according to Hackney.

“Their (the fundraising committee) plan is to gauge initial interest from the community, and then reassess where the remaining needed funds will come from,” he said.

While this project has a long way to go, it is something to get excited about. A fun, new, exciting thing is coming to St. Joseph, and once in place it will be open for everyone to use.

And as Hackney said, “Anytime the Village can add recreational activities, it helps with our mission of making St. Joseph a wonderful place to raise a family.”
