Oakwood cross country places 7th at Regional, Russell finishes 7th, advances to Sectional

With six underclassmen in the lineup, the Oakwood/Salt Fork boys’ cross-country team placed seventh on Saturday (Oct. 22) in the Chrisman Class 1A regional and earned a berth at sectionals.
The Comets’ leaders were freshman Thomas Wells, who was 27th overall and ran the 3-mile course in 18 minutes 34.26 seconds, sophomore Saul Carrillo (39th in 19:23.79) and junior Bryson Capansky (47th in 20:06.43).
The other Oakwood/Salt Fork competitors were freshman Brayden Edwards (52nd in 20:26.62), sophomore Logan Henthorn (55th in 20:40.17) and freshman Ben Darling (65th in 21:39.48).
Team honors were won by Notre Dame de La Salette (31 points), followed by SJ-O (70), Urbana Uni HIgh (75) and Heritage (145). Oakwood’s composite score ws 197.
The Comets will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 29) in the St. Joseph-Ogden Sectional at Dodds Park, in Champaign. The boys’ race will start at 11 a.m.
The Oakwood/Salt Fork girls will have one representative at the sectional.
Junior Macie Russell ran seventh in the 63-runner field, completing the 3-mile course in 19:57.23. She advanced as an individual.
Three of her teammates participated at the regional, but were unable to move on.
Senior Kalie Tison was 37th in 23:55.54, senior Addie Wright was 60th in 30:22.57 and freshman Gracie Haner was 61st in 30:22.57.
Marshall (44 points) won the girls’ regional crown over Urbana Uni High (57).
